THERE’S NOTHING BETTER THAN WATCHING THE SUN SET over the Hudson River on a cool
spring evening. Well, almost nothing: We must admit that toasting a half-million-dollar fundraising effort
while enjoying that breathtaking scene does sweeten the pot.
On March 26 our dear friend Charlie Merinoff, CEO of the Charmer Sunbelt Group, hosted the fifth
annual Wine & Wishes tasting and auction to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Metro New York.
We at Niche Media were honored to be a media partner for the evening, which raised funds to grant
wishes to children with terminal illness. The philanthropic contributions were astounding, and we’re
delighted to be included in such gracious company.
As elite members of society, you deserve a round of applause, our readers and friends, for the generosity
you exhibit throughout the year. And you deserve our gratitude. So each month Gotham dedicates its
“Sweet Charity” column to the work of awe-inspiring organizations and the support—your support—
that makes it all possible. In this issue, for example, actress and vintner extraordinaire Lorraine
Bracco describes how she pours her heart into the Center for Discovery, the Catskills care facility for
the disabled.
This monthly opportunity to spread awareness—to get the word-of-mouth going—is one of the things
we enjoy most about being publishers. So let’s all continue to challenge ourselves to offer our time, our
talents, and our voices to spark progress.
After all, what is money and power if it’s not shared with others? Keep up the giving, and know that
this May issue is dedicated to you!

| May is a month of growth and renewal,
and on its second Sunday we celebrate
the incredible women in our lives who are
mothers. There will be cards and flowers,
lunches and brunches, Champagne toasts
and the “perfect gifts,” all to acknowledge
the special role they play. We pay tribute to
them for the meaningful lessons they’ve
taught us and the countless situations
they’ve guided us through. Mothers help
shape us when we’re children and young
adults, but what amazes me is how this
process continues throughout life. Unlike a
birthday, Mother’s Day is a celebration of
something far more significant—we rejoice
in this special relationship. To my mother,
Elaine, a special message this year: When
your laughter brings you to tears, it’s the
greatest lesson of all!—K.N. |
