Royal Pains’ Reshma Shetty has many hidden talents. But the most unique? She is a classically trained opera singer. “I always tell people that if you can get on stage and sing in a different language with a full orchestra, act and wear huge costumes, everything else isn’t as daunting,” she says with a laugh.
Born in India and raised in England and Virginia, Shetty pursued a degree in medicine before studying opera. Immediately after graduation, she landed the lead in the touring musical Bombay Dreams and soon after got her big break: a starring role on USA Network’s hit Hamptons-based summer series Royal Pains, in which she plays Divya Katdare, a physician’s assistant working for concierge doctor Hank Lawson (played by Mark Feuerstein). “The show is great and the cast is amazing,” she says. “From the producers to the writers to everyone in the crew, it all just works.”
Audiences agree. Royal Pains’ second season premieres this June, and the cast has already begun filming on location in New York (“This season, I’m hoping to have a bit more time to explore,” says Shetty). And on the eve of season two, one question still remains: Is her character as musically inclined as she is? “I know they’re going to do something,” she says. “I could see them doing a whole musical episode, especially since I’m not the only [cast member] who sings!”
